Application of Yaskawa’s motion control products in turret semiconductor sorting machines

Semiconductors play an important role in our daily production and life. They are the core of many Industrial equipment and have a wide range of applications in core fields such as computers, consumer electronics, and network communications. The driving force for the growth of the semiconductor industry has shifted from the traditional PC and related industries to the mobile product market (including smartphones and tablet computers, etc.), and may shift to wearable devices and VR/AR devices in the future.

In the manufacturing process of semiconductor products, the packaging and testing of semiconductors has become an important part of ensuring product quality. The main equipment used is semiconductor sorting machines.

What I want to introduce to you today is the application of Yaskawa’s motion control products in turret semiconductor sorting machines. The turret type sorting machine uses a direct drive motor (DD motor) as the main driving part. Through the rotation of the main turntable, the chips are placed in each station for testing, and finally the automatic equipment for packaging the feeding belt.

Semiconductor Sorter

This semiconductor sorter equipment uses Yaskawa’s overall solution, which I will introduce to you in detail below.

Motion Control Card MP3100

The MP3100 is embedded in a computer and is a controller capable of high-speed, large-capacity data processing. MP3100 can perform data access and motion control with industrial computer through rich API.

You can directly write high-speed motion control programs in the controller through Yaskawa MPE720 software, or you can develop overall logic and multiple functions in the industrial computer, and then perform motion API communication control through the PCI-E interface.

The M-III port of MP3100 can connect up to 32 axes, which can meet the number of control axes of many sorting machines. Its built-in SVC motion module can also complete high-speed and synchronous motion control requirements.

Σ-7 mini motor

(SGM7M type)

Example is SGM7M-B3E* 3.3W mini motor

The moving parts of small precision equipment can use small servo motors. Here we recommend a 33W mini motor (SGM7M-A3E*) with a flange size of 25, which can drive the cam rod to move up and down at high speed. Mini motors are also very popular in other semiconductor devices due to their small size.

Collision detection function

(Special specification for Y3503)

When using conventional semiconductor sorters, the chips are pressed down into the test station used for testing. In each station of the test station, there will be a servo motor that presses down. Nowadays, electronic devices are increasingly developing towards thin and light, and electronic chips are also thin and light. The pressing action of the servo motor is likely to cause damage or even breakage inside the chip, thereby affecting the yield and stability of the device.

The servo motor presses the chip down

To this end, Yaskawa provides a solution for collision detection through the servo side.

①Use MP3100 motion controller and Σ-7 Y3503 servo driver (M-Ⅲ communication type). While ensuring the running speed of the customer, it is ensured that the chip can immediately send an alarm and stop the motor when a collision occurs, preventing chip damage caused by the collision to a certain extent.

② On the basis of the collision detection function, a certain pressure control function is further developed. When the test station needs a certain pressure to ensure the test operation, through the setting of the supporting parameters, a certain pressure can be maintained when pressing down.

Equipment characteristics after adopting Yaskawa’s overall solution:

  • High-speed: Improve the overall speed of the device through the high-speed response of the servo.
  • Stability: Collision detection + certain pressure control function to provide guarantee for the yield of the equipment.
  • Convenience: Multiple sets of pressure parameters can be written online through communication, providing convenience for switching detection materials.
